If you’ve lived in Santa Cruz for more than a week, you know the deal: the ocean is beautiful, the surf is world-class, and the salt air is a straight-up assassin for anything made of metal. Whether you’re cruising down West Cliff, hauling your bike up to Wilder Ranch, or just trying to keep your patio furniture from turning into a pile of orange dust, the struggle against rust is real.
That’s where we come in. At Powder Coat It, we’ve been the local go-to for making metal look better and last longer since we officially opened our doors in 2010. But the obsession actually started back in 2007, when our founder Jeremy was busy tinkering with his 1959 El Camino and a 1988 Saab SPG race car. What started as a hobby to make his own rides bulletproof turned into the best powder coating shop in the Monterey Bay area.
We’re not just a shop; we’re part of the community. Located right on Soquel Avenue (that frontage road off Hwy 1 where the magic happens), we’ve seen everything from rusted-out Boardwalk relics to high-end Silicon Valley speedsters.
Here are 5 iconic transformations that show why locals trust us when they want a finish that’s as tough as a Santa Cruz local.
1. The "Boardwalk Ready" Wheel Refresh
You know that feeling when you’re driving through Seabright and you catch a glimpse of your reflection in a shop window, only to realize your rims look… well, sad? The salt air near the Boardwalk is brutal on alloy wheels. We see a lot of high-end cars that come in with "curb rash" and oxidation that makes even a Porsche look tired.
Take, for example, a local regular who brought in a stunning red Porsche. The factory wheels were fine, but "fine" doesn’t cut it in this town. We took those wheels, stripped them down to the bare metal, and applied a custom gold powder coat that completely changed the vibe of the car.

Why Powder Coating? Unlike traditional paint, powder coating is a solvent-free dry mix of plastic resins and pigments. We bake it on in our massive ovens until it fuses into a single, rock-hard layer. For a car like this, it means the wheels aren't just pretty: they’re protected against brake dust and that sticky sea mist.

2. The Wilder Ranch Trail Shredder
If you aren't hitting the trails in the Santa Cruz Mountains, are you even living here? We get a ton of mountain bikes and BMX frames coming through our shop. Usually, they come in looking like they’ve survived a war: scratched, chipped, and muddy.
One of our favorite local projects was this custom BMX frame. The owner wanted something that screamed "Americana" but could also handle the grit and gravel of a weekend at the pump track. We did a custom red, white, and blue fade that turned heads from the Westside to Capitola.

The Transformation: It went from a chipped, boring black frame to a high-gloss showstopper. Because powder coating is so thick and durable, this bike can take a literal beating on the trails without the finish flaking off. Plus, we’re all about the details: the silver stars and seamless color transitions are what make a "Powder Coat It" job stand out.
3. The Pleasure Point Patio Revival
Let’s talk about the unsung heroes of Santa Cruz living: patio furniture. If you live anywhere near Pleasure Point or Sunny Cove, your outdoor chairs probably look like they’ve been sitting at the bottom of the Pacific.
We recently had a family bring in a set of vintage wrought-iron chairs that had been in their family for decades. They were covered in layers of old, peeling paint and a thick coat of rust. To most people, they were junk. To us? They were a challenge.

The Process:
- Sandblasting: We blasted away every single speck of rust and old paint. This is the most important step: if the prep isn't perfect, the coat won't last.
- Pre-treatment: We applied a zinc-rich primer to give it an extra layer of defense against the salt air.
- The Top Coat: They chose a "Santa Cruz Blue" that looked incredible against the redwood deck.
The "before" was a rusty nightmare; the "after" looked like it just rolled off a showroom floor. Now, those chairs are ready for another 20 years of backyard BBQs and morning coffee in the fog.
4. The "California Calipers" Specialty
If you’re a gearhead, you know that the small details make the biggest difference. A lot of our customers from Scotts Valley and San Jose come over the hill specifically for our California Calipers service.
Brake calipers take a lot of heat, literally. Standard paint just can't handle the temperature cycles of a performance car. We see a lot of Porsches, Teslas, and Chargers coming in for a pop of color.

This Porsche caliper went from a dull, dusty grey to a high-gloss metallic purple with gold lettering. It’s a tiny detail that makes the whole car look custom. Whether you’re driving a Dodge Challenger or a classic hot rod, custom calipers are the ultimate flex.
5. The Westside Engine Bay Glow-Up
Last but not least, we have the engine parts. Since Jeremy started this whole thing because of his own car builds, we have a soft spot for engine components. A vibrant valve cover can make a messy engine bay look like a work of art.
We had a local enthusiast bring in a valve cover for their SAAB: a little nod to Jeremy’s own racing history. The part was oily, grimy, and generally uninspired. We gave it a deep, vibrant blue finish that not only looks "gnarly" (as we say around here) but also helps protect the metal from heat and chemical spills.

This isn't just about looks; it's about longevity. When you invest time into a build, you want it to stay looking good. Our Cerakote and powder finishes are designed to withstand the heat and stress of daily driving: or racing at Laguna Seca.
Why Santa Cruz Chooses "Powder Coat It"
There are other shops out there, but they don't have the local soul we do. When you walk into our shop at 7000 Soquel Ave, you’re talking to people who live and breathe this stuff.
- We’ve Been Here: We’ve been serving this community since 2007 (officially since 2010). We aren't going anywhere.
- The Prep is King: Most shops rush the sandblasting. We don't. If there's a microscopic bit of rust left, the powder won't bond. We do it right the first time.
- Colors for Days: We have thousands of colors and textures to choose from. Want neon pink rims for your SUV? We’ve done it. Want a subtle matte black for your vintage bike? We’ve got you.
