We’ve all been there. You’re trying to squeeze into a tight spot downtown near the Catalyst, or maybe you took a turn a little too sharp while grabbing a coffee on Pacific Ave, and then you hear it. That soul-crushing skreeeeeek.
Your heart sinks. You don’t even have to get out of the car to know what happened. You just invited "Curb Rash" to live on your beautiful rims, and he’s a terrible roommate.
But look, don't let it ruin your weekend at Pleasure Point. At Powder Coat It, we’ve been the go-to spot for rim powder coating in Santa Cruz since we opened our doors in 2010. We’ve seen wheels that looked like they went through a blender and brought them back to a factory-fresh (or better than factory) finish.
If your wheels are looking a little beat up, don't go out and drop thousands on a new set. Here is our signature 5-step process for taking your wheels from "trashed" to "top-tier."
Why Santa Cruz Roads are Hard on Wheels
Before we dive into the "how," let’s talk about the "why." Santa Cruz is beautiful, but between the salt air blowing off the Monterey Bay and the constant construction on Highway 1, our cars take a beating.
Salt is the silent killer. If you have even a tiny scratch from curb rash, that salty mist gets in there and starts the oxidation process. Before you know it, your finish is peeling, and your wheels look ten years older than they are. That’s why powder coating in Santa Cruz isn't just about looking cool, it’s about survival.
Step 1: The Deep Clean and Disassembly
First thing’s first: we can’t work on dirty wheels. When you bring your rims to our shop on Soquel Ave, the first thing we do is get them naked. We remove the tires, the valve stems, and any balancing weights.
Then comes the bath. We use specialized cleaners to strip away years of baked-on brake dust, road tar, and Highway 17 grime. You’d be shocked at what’s hiding under there. This isn’t just a garden hose job; we’re talking professional-grade degreasing to ensure we have a totally clean surface to work with.
Step 2: The "Magic" Curb Rash Repair
This is where the real transformation begins. If you’ve got deep gouges or scratches along the edge of your rim, we don't just "paint over it." (Please, for the love of all things holy, don’t try to DIY this with a silver Sharpie).
We carefully sand and grind down the affected areas. If the gouges are deep, we can use specialized fillers or TIG welding to add metal back to the rim. Once the structural integrity is solid, we smooth it all out until the profile of the wheel is perfect again. By the time we’re done with this step, you won't even be able to point out where the damage was. It’s like it never happened.

Step 3: Sandblasting (The Clean Slate)
Now that the shape is back to normal, we need to prep the surface for the powder. We take the wheels into our blast cabinet and hit them with high-pressure media.
This does two things:
- It strips away every last bit of the old paint, clear coat, and primer.
- It "etches" the metal.
Imagine trying to tape something to a piece of glass versus a piece of wood. The "tooth" created by sandblasting gives the powder something to grab onto. This is a huge reason why powder coating is so much more durable than traditional spray paint. It’s literally bonded to the metal.
Step 4: The Electrostatic Powder Application
Now for the fun part! This is where you get to pick your vibe. Whether you want a classic gloss black, a sophisticated bronze, or something wild like neon pink to match the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, we’ve got the colors to make it happen.
We use an electrostatic gun to spray a fine, dry powder onto the wheels. The gun gives the powder a positive charge, while the wheel is grounded. This creates a magnetic-like attraction that pulls the powder into every nook and cranny of the rim, ensuring an even, wrap-around coat that you just can't get with a spray can.

Step 5: The Big Bake (Curing)
Once the wheels are coated in "dust," we roll them into our massive industrial oven. We bake them at around 400 degrees Fahrenheit. During this process, the powder melts, flows together, and undergoes a chemical reaction called cross-linking.
When they come out and cool down, that powder has turned into a hard, plastic-like shell that is incredibly resistant to chips, scratches, and chemicals. It’s the ultimate armor for your wheels. After a final quality check from our team, they’re ready to be mounted back on your ride.

Why Powder Coat Instead of Buying New Rims?
I get asked this a lot at the shop. "Jeremy, shouldn't I just buy new wheels?"
Here's the deal: most OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) wheels are actually really high quality. They’re built to be safe and durable. A lot of the "cheap" aftermarket wheels you find online are made of inferior alloys that crack or bend the second you hit a pothole on Mission St.
By choosing rim powder coating in Santa Cruz, you’re keeping your high-quality factory wheels but giving them a custom look and a much stronger finish. Plus, it’s way cheaper than a new set of quality rims. You’re saving money and the environment by not tossing perfectly good metal into a scrap heap.
