Soquel has a pretty great setup: Soquel Village, Soquel Drive, redwood-covered hills, and plenty of cars, bikes, motorcycles, boats, and outdoor furniture that see their share of coastal fog and salt air.
And if you’re in Soquel, our shop at 7000 Soquel Avenue in Santa Cruz is literally right down the road. That makes dropping off parts, checking out colors, and picking up your finished project a whole lot easier.
We’re Powder Coat It. We’ve been established since 2010, and we help local customers turn tired metal parts into durable, custom-finished pieces that look seriously sharp.
Powder Coating vs. Traditional Paint
Traditional paint can look great. For a while.
Then the chips show up. Moisture sneaks in. Rust starts making itself comfortable. Coastal fog and salt air only speed up the process.
Powder coating takes a different approach. We apply a dry powder made from resins, pigments, and fillers to a properly prepared metal surface. The powder gets charged electrostatically, sticks to the part, and then melts and cures in an oven.
The result is a thick, consistent finish that offers:
- Better resistance to chipping and everyday wear
- Strong protection against moisture and corrosion
- Excellent color and texture options
- A clean, uniform appearance
- No liquid solvents in the coating application
- A finish that works well for indoor and outdoor projects
Powder coating isn’t magic armor. A deep scratch can still expose metal, especially in a salty coastal environment. Good surface preparation matters. So does choosing the right powder and taking care of the finished part.
But compared with ordinary spray paint, professionally applied powder coating is a serious upgrade.
What We Powder Coat
If it’s metal and can safely handle the curing process, there’s a good chance we can coat it.
We work on:
- Car and truck wheels and rims
- Brake calipers
- Car and truck frames
- Motorcycle frames
- Bicycle and e-bike frames
- Suspension parts and brackets
- Boats and marine hardware
- Patio furniture
- Household fixtures
- Farm and agricultural equipment parts
- Custom automotive and restoration components

We also offer ceramic exhaust coating for high-heat parts such as headers and exhaust pipes. Standard powder coating is not designed for exhaust temperatures, so ceramic coating is the better choice when the part lives in the hot zone.

How Our Powder Coating Process Works
A good finish starts long before the powder gun comes out.
1. Project review
We look at the part, its material, its condition, and how you want it to look. Photos are a great place to start, especially if you’re still planning the project.
We’ll talk through color, gloss, texture, corrosion concerns, and any areas that need to stay uncoated.
2. Surface preparation and media blasting
We remove dirt, grease, rust, old paint, and other contamination. Media blasting helps create a clean surface that gives the powder something solid to grab onto.
This step is a big deal. Powder over a dirty or failing surface is a shortcut to a disappointing result. We’d rather do it right the first time.
3. Masking critical areas
Threads, bearing surfaces, mounting points, gasket faces, and other precision areas may need masking.
The goal is simple: coat the areas that should be coated and protect the areas that should not.
4. Electrostatic powder application
We apply the dry powder with an electrostatic spray gun. The charged powder is attracted to the grounded metal part, helping create even coverage across the surface.
This is where your project starts looking less like a rusty garage find and more like a finished build.
5. Oven curing
The coated part goes into the oven. Heat melts the powder and cures it into a smooth, durable finish.
Curing temperatures and times depend on the part and the powder system being used. High-heat exhaust parts follow a different ceramic coating process.
6. Final inspection
After the part cools, we remove masking and inspect the finish. We check coverage, edges, color, texture, and overall appearance before the project heads back to you.

Powder Coating for Coastal Soquel
Soquel’s coastal climate is beautiful. Metal parts may have a less romantic opinion.
Fog, damp air, road grime, and salt can all contribute to corrosion. Powder coating creates a durable barrier between the metal and the environment. For outdoor and marine projects, we can help you choose a finish suited to the part’s use.
A few simple maintenance habits help, too:
- Wash off salt and road grime with mild soap and fresh water
- Avoid harsh abrasives
- Check for deep chips or scratches
- Touch up exposed metal before corrosion gets a foothold
- Don’t let standing water collect around hardware or seams
Powder coating helps protect your parts. Basic maintenance helps keep that protection working.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does powder coating cost in Soquel?
Pricing depends on the part, preparation, size, condition, color, and finish. Common prices include single automotive wheels at $100-$200, bicycle or e-bike frames at $150-$300, motorcycle frames at $350 and up, patio chairs at $200-$300 each, and patio furniture sets at $1,500-$2,200. Send photos for a project-specific quote.
How long does powder coating last?
A professionally prepared and cured powder-coated finish can last for years. Lifespan depends on the part, exposure, use, maintenance, and whether the finish gets chipped or scratched. Outdoor and marine parts benefit from regular cleaning and the right coating system.
Can you powder coat aluminum?
Yes. Aluminum wheels, frames, brackets, and other parts can often be powder coated as long as the material is sound and can safely go through the curing process. Proper cleaning and preparation are especially important with aluminum.
Can you powder coat over rust or old paint?
We do not simply cover loose rust, grease, or failing paint. The part needs proper preparation first, which may include media blasting and additional cleaning. Powder coating can protect sound metal, but it cannot repair structural damage, deep corrosion, or cracked parts.
Do tires and bearings need to come off before powder coating?
Usually, yes. Tires, bearings, rubber components, plastic pieces, seals, and other heat-sensitive parts should be removed before coating. Bring parts disassembled whenever possible, and ask us if you’re unsure about a specific component.
Can you match a specific color?
We offer a wide selection of colors, gloss levels, textures, and specialty finishes. Exact matching depends on the original color, material, lighting, and powder availability. If you have a color sample, paint code, or reference photo, bring it along and we’ll help find the closest practical option.
Can you ceramic coat exhaust headers and pipes?
Yes. Ceramic exhaust coating is designed for high-heat parts such as headers, exhaust pipes, turbo housings, downpipes, mufflers, and heat shields. Standard powder coating is not suitable for those temperatures, so ceramic coating is the better choice for exhaust components.
